The Department of Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development in South Africa has laid off 5000 assistant agricultural practitioners nationwide.
According to the official letter released by the department, with Reference: 5/3/1/9 and signed by Mr. B. Msomi, Chief Director of National Extension Support Services, it states.
RE: TERMINATION OF THE EMPLOYMENT CONTRACTS FOR ASSISTANT AGRICULTURAL PRACTITIONERS
The Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD) appointed Assistant Agricultural Practitioners (AAPs) for three months (January 2023 to March 2023) during the 2022/23 financial year to strengthen capacity of extension and advisory services. The contracts were later extended by three months (April 2023 to June 2023) and finally by one month (July 2023).
The Department at this stage cannot sustain this additional costs due to budget cuts onthe Compensation of Employees (COE). However, the Department will continue to explore finding a solution for the practitioners. It is regrettable that the Department has to inform the AAPs of the termination of the employment contracts as at end of 31 July 2023 at 16h00.
The Department wish to extend its gratitude to the AAPs for partcipating in this programme and also their patience in allowing the Department to follow all due processes.
Your cooperation in this regard will be highly appreciated.
Mr. B. Msomi, Chief Director National Extension Support Services
