Despite the American Academy of Pediatrics’ advice that youngsters wait until they are 16 to operate farm equipment, under federal regulations, employees as young as 14 can operate tractors provided they successfully complete a certification program.

A 16-year-old can lawfully operate an agricultural tractor and trailer on the road after obtaining a provisional category F driving license and passing the F tractor driving exam. A 16-year-old is only permitted to operate a certain kind of tractor and trailer on public roads, though.
