Deathlayer chicken, also known as the Westfälischer Totleger, is a German breed of domestic chicken. It is more than 400 years old and is a rare breed.
History of Deathlay Chicken
The Totleger (Deathlayer chicken) is a rare heritage breed native to Westphalia connected to the Braekel and Ostfriesische Möwe types. The introduction of alien breeds in the 1880s caused a drop in the population of this once-common egg producer. Since this rare breed was designated as “Stark gefährdet” (gravely endangered) in 2016, immediate preservation actions are required.
Until the 1880s, when more prolific foreign breeds arrived, the Totleger was well-liked throughout its peak. As a result, it changed from a working breed to an exhibition breed, and its numbers gradually decreased.
