African countries spend money on the importation of food commodities than invest in domestic food production to meet demand and stabilize food prices.
In a media release Prosper Chikomo, founder and chief empowerment officer at Prosper on Farms, a Zimbabwe-based startup specializing in irrigation systems, expressed his view on the essence of African countries focusing on the basics of farming like irrigation and not Artificial Intelligence (AI) for farming.
Prosper Chikomo made clear instances of Africa importing more than they produce, which he sees as a great opportunity for investors to troop in to support agriculture development in Africa; there are constraints to farming in Africa.
Prosper outlined the major challenges in Africa, including dependency on unpredictable seasonal changes and rain patterns, which have resulted in massive post-harvest losses.
Irrigation farming is a basic solution that needs to be championed among farmers in Africa before any other method of precision farming is incorporated. The speaker clarifies that there is much potential to be harnessed in Africa’s agricultural sector, considering the basics and not complex AI systems.
