Ghana Becomes The First African Country To Implement Cage-Free Poultry

Battery Cage

In the fight of improving animal welfare in Ghana, 62 poultry farmers have vowed to ban the use of cage systems for raising birds.

The campaign to ban animal cruelty initiative started with the Animal Welfare League formed by a team of veterinarians from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

The league is an animal advocacy group dedicated to improving animal welfare in Ghana. The non-profit organization collaborates with businesses, stakeholders, communities, and governments to promote animal welfare in order to improve the environment and animal and human health.

According to Myjoyonline, the team met with some poultry farmers at a recent workshop with took place in Koforidua in the Eastern region of Ghana where 31 farmers willingly vowed to join the network of cage-free poultry production.

As more farmers around the country sign on to the use of free cages in growing poultry birds, the push to eliminate battery cages in poultry farming is soon to gain more traction.
