His Royal Highness King Charles III made a declaration to reduce food waste and a group of farmers took to their forums to express their view on what they expect rather from His Royal Highness King Charles III.
One member says that instead of HRH KC3 working with farmers to reduce food waste, how about him making the effort to reduce bureaucracy that drives UK farmers towards extinction.
What’s happening to farmers in the UK?
According to Agrirs, the number of self-employed farmers declined by more than 21%, from 138,000 in 2019 to 109,000 in 2020. Wheat harvest dipped by 37.5% in 2020 compared to the previous year, while barley harvest climbed by 3.9%. Horticulture crop area grew by 1.7% to 166 thousand hectares in 2020.
While many farmers in the UK shared their concerns about unfavourable policies not helping farm works in the UK others claim they see no relevance in the said project of HRH KC3 working with farmers to reduce food waste.
When it comes to food waste reduction, recycling and sustainability, farmers are known to do well in reducing food waste hence this is not an initiative they would want to look at, at the moment.
Muddyroads a forum contributor from Exeter, Devon raised an interesting comment on vegetables that get reject due to failure to meet prescriptive specification from the shops. These rejected vegetables stay in the field and sometimes the longer they stay, the shorter the lifespan hence contributing to food waste.
For some food growers, they don’t believe food is going waste but rather energy. The mouldy vegetables that end up in the landfills can generate methane for electricity generation rather than watch it all rot down.
Currently, much needs to be done on both sides of farmers production and consumption by the United Kingdom population.
