History

The Deathlay chicken is a rare heritage breed of chicken from Westphalia known as the “Deathlayer Chicken,” it is related to the Braekel and Ostfriesische Möwe breeds. The population of this formerly widespread egg producer decreased as a result of the introduction of alien breeds in the 1880s. The urgent need for preservation measures stems from this unique breed’s designation as “Stark gefährdet” (gravely endangered) in 2016.

Until the arrival of more populous foreign breeds in the 1880s, the Totleger enjoyed popularity at its height. Because of this, it evolved from a working breed to an exhibition breed, and as a result, its population slowly dwindled.
