Capital investment in Agriculture in Africa has challenged most agric enthusiasts, and Nigeria is no exception. Globally, agriculture has been a major contributor to many African countries’ GDP, making it a prerequisite for more investment.
The initiative which includes the Young Africa Works IITA project, was designed to equip and enhance Agribusiness in Nigeria to provide job opportunities for 40,000 Nigerian young women and men with a special focus on skills development, decent employment, and entrepreneurship opportunities to secure work in agri-food value chains for the next five years.
The IITA initiative is intended for young people in Lagos, Kano, and Kaduna between 18 and 35. Through coaching and mentorship, this course, which focuses on agribusiness development, will allow young people to expand their enterprises as they learn about modern farming and value-adding methods.
Through work placements and internship possibilities, they are also introduced to marketing techniques for agricultural products, connections to the market, and career orientation.
There will be no development in Nigeria without the youth. The best way to end poverty is to create opportunities, and this is what this project is all about. By creating career opportunities and youth-led enterprises, we are planting a seed of change for the next generation. It is in this line that the Young Africa Works-IITA project was developed by the youth, for the youth, and with the youth.
Aline Mugisho, Executive Manager, Young Africa Works-IITA project.
