Mystic Onyx Chickens: Pros and Cons for Buyers

Mystic Onyx Chicken Breed

Have you seen photos online of chickens with shiny black feathers that look blue, green, and purple in the sun? Those are Mystic Onyx chickens! I just got some information on this rare chicken breed and wanted to share it with you.

First, the Good Stuff

Mystic Onyx hens are awesome egg layers – they produce about 220-250 large brown eggs every year. For most families, that’s more than enough eggs without needing a huge chicken farm operation. Since they are a mix of breeds that lay well, the Mystic Onyx has egg laying in its genes.

Although they look like mysterious chickens, Mystic Onyx actually have very sweet personalities! They make nice pets, get along with people and other chickens, and don’t make too much noise. They like to gently wander around (free range) instead of loudly digging up yards.

And obviously, these chickens look awesome! Their black feathers shine in jewel tones from green to blue to purple. They look so cool that even visitors love seeing them. And the chickens photograph beautifully if you like taking chicken pics!

What Are the Downsides?

First, Mystic Onyx need a good amount of secured outdoor space. Since they like to roam around, they can get aggressive, hurt themselves, or get sick if they don’t have enough area. Make sure your yard is ready for active chickens before getting them.

Sometimes Mystic Onyx hens try to sit on a nest of eggs until they hatch into chicks, even if you don’t want more chickens! You’ll need to check for eggs often so they don’t go broody. Unless you want to breed them, then it’s great!

Finally, as a unique rare breed, Mystic Onyx cost more money to purchase than standard chickens. Definitely make sure your budget allows for a pricier chicken before adopting some.

Still Sounds Great…What Now?

If you have the outdoor space, time to care for them, and budget for food and vet visits, Mystic Onyx can make awesome pets! Just make sure you have a plan if they do hatch chicks. And be prepared to become very popular with your neighbors thanks to gorgeous chickens!
