Nigerian Women Urged To Be More Active In Livestock Farming

Price of Livestock Feed Concentrates In Nigeria

Dr. Olufemi Bolarin, an agricultural expert, seeks women’s involvement in economic activities like livestock farming. Dr. Bolarin is the Kogi State Coordinating Office of the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES).

At a special training event on preventing sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment, as well as gender-based violence, Dr. Bolarin emphasized the crucial role women play in the livestock sector.

However, he also acknowledged the challenges they often face, such as limited access to resources, lack of decision-making power, and vulnerability to violence.

The Importance of Empowering Women

Dr. Bolarin explained that gender-based violence not only directly harms women but also prevents them from fully contributing to the development of the livestock sector and society as a whole.

He said, “These are not just numbers; they represent the lived experiences of individuals, impacting their physical and mental well-being, their sense of security, and their ability to participate fully in society.”

Addressing gender-based violence is not just the right thing to do; it’s also a strategic necessity for sustainable development. When women are empowered and free from violence, they can fully engage in economic activities like livestock farming, leading to increased productivity and resilience within the sector.

Dr. Bolarin’s message is clear: women’s participation in livestock farming is essential for the prosperity of the industry and the communities it supports.
